BLADE RUNNER 2049: Blog-Review, Tech, Society, & the Singularity…

Like other movie blogs I’ve written, I try to give the reader more of my impressions and interpretations instead of a simple description…that’s what Google and Wikipedia are for! Same goes for Blade Runner 2049. And my obligatory SPOILER notation.

Definitely Dystopian. Even more than the first Blade Runner movie directed by Ridley Scott, and that was pretty future-grime! But that’s great for this series…

Blade Runner 2049, directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Hampton Francher (whom co-scripted the original movie) and Michael Green, started off letting the audience know that the main protagonist, Officer K (Ryan Gosling), is not only a replicant, but a Blade Runner–a special enforcer sent out to “retire” (kill) the android-replicants; especially those that had escaped to Earth after turning mutinous against their human-creators (Blade Runner ‘82), in particular, the Off-Worlder ones. I think this is a good thing to establish upfront in the movie. Both in terms of “Fourth-Wall”-aspect of, in real life, the story of Blade Runner is one of the most well-loved SciFi movies in history, and in terms of the movie’s plot of not lingering too long as to whether or not Officer K is “one of them…?”  There’s already enough back and forth about whether or not former blade runner Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is a replicant or human! One existential mystery is at capacity for one movie, in my opinion. Unless there was a very compelling need in the plot to have more identity-mysteries about who’s a replicant.

The bottom line for this particular mission for Officer K is he needs to kill, what is believed to be, the offspring of a human being and a replicant! K’s boss, Lieutenant Joshi (Robin Wright), rather simply, explained to Officer K that it would bring chaos to the known world–id est, only biological beings (humans, specifically) could procreate; not replicants! And certainly not a hybrid of human and replicant!
Speaking as an African-American with two bi-racial daughters from my interracial marriage, plus the history of interracial relationships and marriage in the US and other Western societies, this issue really spoke to me! Mind you, cross-racial relations are totally not even close as mixing a hominid with android, but the similarities works for me as a fan and viewer. Oh, by the way, it just so happens that the hybrid offspring is the union between former Officer Deckard and one of the replicants he was supposed to retire many decades ago by the name of Rachael (Sean Young)–an android made by the late-, and very smushed-face Dr. Eldon Tyrell (Joe Turkel)! The plot thickens… Indeed, a lot more to this detail in Blade Runner 2049, but even I draw the line as to how much Spoilery I put into my review-blogs!

I must say, in regards to character Lieutenant Joshi’s reasons given about maintaining that wall of societal order, besides the cross-species-android aspect to it all, I also saw it as that big word that we, in the Science Fiction business, and scientists love to throw around: SINGULARITY. This aspect of Blade Runner 2049 seems quite well-timed about humanity’s anxiousness about high-tech’s role in replacing us–humans–in the workforce and, dare I say, even in personal relationships, such as goes on quite a bit in this movie! And that’s one of the main thrust to the challenges of the Blade Runner series, isn’t it? In Blade Runner ‘82, did Deckard make love to Rachael in that piano scene, when she tried to run out of his L.A. apartment…? With the exception of a few publications and tv news-shows, the Singularity-issue is something in post-2016 election America that’s not talked intelligently enough in my opinion. Coal industry? Scrapping NAFTA (not as directly tied to Tech, but with productivity due to Tech…)? Does the US military really need to be so populated with humans when a lot of drones, driverless vehicles, etc, can do the job at a much-reduced cost?

Yeah, we’re in the midst of 2049-Singularity right now in 2017 and most of us don’t even seem to realize this! The Tech-Singularity is not like Hollywood’s SciFi movies; think self-checkout kiosks at a grocery store, a sensor on a production-line in a factory (I’ve seen that tech in person at one of the factories I’ve worked at years ago), or apps for social drivers instead of taxi cabs…Welcome to 2049; 2017-style!

From a more formal or design aspect of Blade Runner 2049, I really liked how they “culturally” tied in the environs of the settings with the original movie–tech-gadgetry whirring in the background that, we, Blade Runner fans recognize; the very manner how the characters give voice-commands to their computer-devices (think how Deckard talked to his device in ‘82-version while he inspected a photograph: makes me think of our phones and domestic voice-interface devices of today!); and, of course, that gritty, dystopian “feel” of Los Angeles of the future with all its cyberpunk naughtiness, neons, and holograms!

I’m not giving away the ending. I don’t think any Spoilery-blog or movie review should ever do that. I will say that a potential reviewer should beware that, happily, I’d put ‘49 more into the “Intellectual-SciFi,” or “Cerebral-Scifi” category. Trust me, I love the typical Hollywood, action-packed SciFi movies. But it’s refreshing to watch a movie where there is so much silence or quietness; giving the viewer time to absorb the scenes! I’ve mentioned this in one of my other movie blogs: The gauge that my wife and I use as to how good a movies is or is not, we ask this simple question to one another: Is It Blu Ray-worthy?

Now, that, spoiler I can unequivocally answer and say hell yes!

Tech: Baby Boomers, & Even Some GenXers, Still Don’t Get It!

Ok, I’m a classic Geek but not a Techie, but even I get that Tech-industries and their spin-offs are what’s happenin’!
I’ve mentioned several times of my trip to Silicon Valley in 2016–though for Alien Con, it still taught me a lot of where the future is. And it’s not just the San Fran region, but Silicon Alley, and, hell, there’s even a Silicon Prairie! This shows that there are a lot of people throughout the US that are not necessarily trying to mimic the Valley, but, rightly so, trying to compete with it and even learn from the kids out there. (And I do mean Kids! Check out my “A Slammer’s Wist: San Francisco” >> https://www.facebook.com/notes/jose… )
What’s driving me crazy is it’s not just the Baby Boomer generation that’s still holding recalcitrant attitudes toward Tech, in general–as if it were some fad or something, but even my peer GenXers!
Without divulging any details, I recently sat with a professional investment agent. Originally I went to this person for one line of service, but got excited when I was told by this individual that s/he also worked with clients on investing in sectors such as Tech! Several days later, as we sat to discus my options, this agent showed me the OGs of Mutual Funds and the likes–as in, certain “legacy companies’ ” investments in Tech stocks–and even then, the levels were modest by my standards! Perhaps it’s because I’m a blue-collar worker. Never mind that I’m in Grad School, but I suppose that doesn’t count.
The agent seemed to try to steer me away from actual Tech investments and to stick with that good ol’-fashioned holdings and shit… I basically told this person, Look, I’m in my late-forties, I want to make money fast and specifically in Tech–something I believe in.
Also, I was watching Bloomberg TV and they had the CEO of Verizon, Lowell McAdams, on and he was interviewed during a conference. No offense to him, but he seemed rather nonchalant about Tech-platforms! As if Verizon would eventually get to it, but, to paraphrase McAdams, the industry was saturated! Platform Hunt did a great article on plaforms >> https://medium.com/platform-hunt/th… . What’s the big deal? I’m a SciFi author, and though I’m not making a living out of it, but if it weren’t for Smashwords and Inkitt ebook publishers (platform), and if it weren’t for Soundcloud (platform), and the podcasts I’ve done with a couple of podcasters (platform)–one out of Toronto–my eNovels, eNovellas, and eBook-shorts would not have gotten the thousands of readings of my books. Which is very modest, still. I’m old enough to remember the days of, literally, cut-and-paste flyers to get your name out; mailing paper copies of my books to publishers and agents–lots of money on postage for me!
Or, how about this: How many of us know any Boomers (roughly 65 and older) that have high-quality smartphones? I mean, Apple or, even, a Samsung? If they cannot afford one, that’s different. I’m talking about Boomers who deliberately go out of their way to not buy a quality (does not have to be the most expensive) smartphone. When I run into a co-worker of such age and we chat about phones, I get the sense that they see smartphones as some toy that’s just a fad and all these Millennials and GenXers are missing the “real” important things in life–you know; puppies and shit.
Deloitte has a wonderful article on Tech-trends >> https://www2.deloitte.com/us/en/pag… . From 3D Printing to robots to cognitive technologies, they point out this is where the world is going, Kids!
Indeed, for certain major urban centers on the globe, it’s not the future; this is happening now, Baby Boomers… You, too, fellow GenXers!

Houston’s Hurricane Harvey-Disaster: Did Human Negligence Augment an Eco-Tragedy?

SECULAR ORDER takes the position on Climate Change, in general, from a scientific view.  It has been explained by geological and climate scientists for years that, among other methods, ice core samples of the earth provides static evidence of the earth’s prior environs from thousands and even millions of years.  Take a look at Ice Core 101’s link >>  http://climatechange.umaine.edu/icecores/IceCore/Ice_Core_101.html

Striated sedimentation also provides evidence–look at how humans discover a lot of dinosaur fossils and ancient human history!  Of course there are even more high-tech means to study earth’s ancient climate, such as radiocarbon dating…in other words, there are plenty of disciplines within science to accurately measure the earth’s climate from eons before.

And yet we let a political movement within the Conservative political parties and churches all over the world try to make us doubt, literally, millions of years of data that the earth provides for us because some of us are scared of political retribution!

“Global surface temperature relative to 1951-1980 average temperatures. Sixteen of the 17 warmest years in the 136-year record all have occurred since 2001, with the exception of 1998. The year 2016 ranks as the warmest on record.” (Source: NASA/GISS)  That’s NASA, folks.  Here’s the link to that article >>  https://climate.nasa.gov/vital-signs/global-temperature/

Now that we got the elementals out of the way…so, now that we are actually living in the era of Climate Chaos that climate scientists had warned us about–The Great Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004, Hurricane Katrina, Super-Storm Sandy, entire islands being swallowed whole by rising ocean-levels in the Pacific (Daily Mail, May 9, 2016 >>  http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3578249/Sea-level-rise-claims-five-islands-Solomons-study.html ), the constant, epic monsoon flooding in the Asian seas that mostly affect India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan that are augmented by Global Warming (Wikipedia >>  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monsoon )…and, of course, the most recent of these monstrous storms, Hurricane Harvey striking Houston, Texas; the forth largest city in the United States–

Again, so now that we are actually living in the era of Climate Apocalypse that earth scientists and Science Fiction authors had warned us about (including yours truly!~see my LinkedIn page) for nearly 100 years, what now?  Even climate-experts and organizations, such as 350.org (> https://350.org/  ), admitted that the earth has already surpassed the benchmark of 350 parts per million of particulate-pollution in the atmosphere since around 2016 and the best we can do is slow the warming of earth!  What can we do?

Well, as much as I hate to admit it, but this assessment is true and we, Humans, all over the world need to start crafting legislation and curbing cultural habits based on where we are now as a planet!  As in:

–National governments step up and be big kids and not be intimidated by the private sector and start prohibiting development on most of the coastal areas of, pretty much, all continents!  Yeah, the ocean- and sea-levels are rising, but we can stop Humans from building in coastal strips where we know will, eventually, crumble into the waters!

–Again, time for national governments to give corporations and the private sector the finger and stop subsidizing the coal, oil, gas, and other retro-energies and start funding (yes, by taxes, damn it!  But also some incentivizations, etc) wind, solar, bio-mass, and other alternative energies!  This will require governments (private sector can jump in on this and actually make a new cottage industry with lots of money!) to invest in citizens and educate them and re-tool the masses for appropriate, alternative energy sectors.

–Citizens, we do not get a pass just because this is some big-picture shit.  My wife and I recycle; that’s awesome and all, but that’s only a fraction of a fraction of what we, as global citizens, have to do.  We could volunteer to pick up trash in our cities and country-side from time to time; attend local city council meetings when our respective municipals have special votes and legislation on our local environment.

Had city officials of Houston done these principles, especially after Hurricane Katrina–where there was an actual environmental apocalypse in real time, with scientists constantly warning the US government about building in flood-zones and attacking Global Warming–it is very safe to say that Hurricane Harvey could have been greatly mitigated! Not avoided, but the hundreds of thousands of citizens affected in Houston could have been a few hundred…

This is it, kids.  As the new aphorism goes, There Is No Planet B, so we might as well try!

“ANTIFA, Pacifism, & Where I Fit In.”

Ordinis Saecularis.  Joseth Moore.  August 27, 2017.

Look, I’m a Progressive Atheist now, but raised as a pacifist.  So, I know and understand where my fellow-Lefties who are of the granola-pacifist faction are coming from.  Only, my pacifism was not of the Liberal nor Hippie background…

I was raised Pentecostal in my youth.  Pacifist-Pentecostal.  My late-father, whom was the pastor of the First Pentecostal Holiness church of Lincoln, Nebraska, had taught his congregation that it was a “sin” to kill in any way–even for self-defense!  He took that verse in in the Old Testament of the Bible, Exodus 20:13, as, literally, it was a sin to kill.  Rather than to mean, you really shouldn’t go around and murder people.  But it was his congregation; his rules, as pertain to a pastor’s discretion.

But because of that lack of differentiation, I grew up thinking it was a sin to do any type of self-defensive action!  The philosophy was, ‘Even in self-defense you have a high chance of killing another human being–even if your intentions are not to…and the Bible says, Thou Shalt Not Kill.  Therefore, playing it safe to stay in God’s good graces, we, Pentecostals will not join the military, take self-defense classes…’

You get the point.  I registered as conscientious objector when I turned 18.  I got beat up a couple of times and did not defend myself…

Fast forward to the Joseth anytime around 2005 and beyond, that pacifism is long gone!  Largely due to me leaving the church and becoming an Atheist–besides pacifism, a great deal of other non-religious concepts I dropped.  But that’s for another Editor’s corner.

I bring this up because it’s a very important issue for American Progressives (and others, especially in Europe), with all the hatred and violence that Donald Trump has catalyzed in this country during the 2016 campaign and after he, I guess, won the electoral college vote.  And with all the White nationalism movement being regenerated under Trump, the American-Left’s de facto troops–the Anarchists–have, also, been galvanized!  And let’s just say, they’re not of the ’60s SNCC (Student for Nonviolent Coordinating Committee~The King Center) movement!  In particular, the faction of Anarchists with the ANTIFA (Anti-Fascist Action~wikipedia) philosophy.  These black-cladded Progressives are the Left’s army against the neo-Nazis and neo-Confederates that might be thinking of trying to intimidate minorities by holding torch-lit rallies in America’s streets!

I know a lot of Progressives in our modern-day coalition disagree with me on this, but ANTIFA is very much needed!  So, what are we, minorities of various categories, supposed to do; let Nazis carry out an American version of Kristallnacht while we shiver indoors and let them take even more power than they already have in USA?

I don’t think so.

This has always been the biggest weak-spot for us on the Left.  We’re open-minded and accepting of everyone–unless you’re out to kill us, the earth, and other exceptions, of course!  But while the Right Wingers had been amassing their weapons of all sorts during the ’80s and ’90s, during their heydays of anti-government -ism, we Progressives had been walking on eggs to placate these people (via moderate legislation on gun control, etc).  Right Wingers who believe that the mere existence of my bi-racial daughters and my marriage to their mom (and my current wife) is some kind of “abomination” at the very genetic level!

No more.  No more placating-legislation to appease the Right Wingers.  No more minorities feeling scared walking down our own streets that we pay our hard-earned taxes for!  And no more pacifism for me and a large portion of this generation of Progressives…

“Operation Thunderclap,” A Short, Eco-Fiction by Joseth Moore.

Operation Thunderclap,” by Joseth Moore. Smashwords. Copyright @ 2015.

SYNOPSIS:  Phyllis Lund is a lawyer with her own firm out of Minneapolis. She also has a night job, as it were, fighting for environmental causes.
This time around, she and her retired investigative reporter friend have found a story much bigger than they’re used to…one that involves a military secret, and a trap they can’t see. A trap built specifically for them.

Minneapolis, Minnesota. Present Day. Lund & Associates law firm…

“Phyllis, you have a call from some guy from DC,” Erin, Phyllis’ secretary intern, called out to her as the young woman walked by Phyllis’ office. It was the start of the day and the small law firm was expecting some new clients to stop by. Lund & Assoc had to put on a show for them.
Phyllis frowned to herself. She didn’t do a lot of business with people out East.
“Did he say he was looking for someone to represent him in court,” she asked the disembodied Erin–she was, now, somewhere in the back of the small office; getting things set up for those new clients coming in. “I have to focus on the Hapshaw account! I won’t have time to do it…have Ed take it.”
Phyllis could hear Erin talking to the person from Washington, DC as she tried to pass him onto one of Phyllis’ junior partners. For a short while, Erin went quiet–listening to the person on the phone.
“Something about the Yucca project? And something about those bastards did it?” By that time, Erin had walked into Phyllis’ office; the cordless phone yet up to her ear. Apparently she was waiting to see if the man on the line had anything else to say and whether or not Phyllis would even take the call!
For a while, the middle-aged Phyllis just sat at her big, modern desk; trying to figure out the message…then it hit her!
“Oh, my god! I’ll take it,” she said to Erin as she actually got up and snatched the cordless from her. She then gently pushed her intern toward her office door. “Get Deborah, too, will you? Have her take over for me today.”
Erin shot an agitated look her way before Phyllis shut the door to her office.
“Andy…?”
“Yeah, it’s me, kiddo,” an elderly man’s voice affirmed.
“Oh, my god…so they actually did it?”
“Yep, I’m afraid so…only, these days, now we have fracking to complicate it!”
“No!”
“Yep…”
Phyllis’ eyes were searching her executive office; more out of feeling helpless than for a need. “How bad?”
“Mmm, something like a two-pointer. May be bigger!”
“Oh, god…” Now Phyllis froze on the spot. “Where?”
“Several miles south of Kingman, Arizona–”
“Might as well be across the street!”
“Yep…The governor gave the fracking industry the green light to drill all they want, and this is what happens.”
“We told everybody this,” Phyllis said tersely; more to herself.
“Yeah, we did, Phyl…don’t blame yourself. You were just a law student at the time. Besides, they would’ve found some other legal martial arts to get around whatever environmental roadblocks we put up anyway!”
Silence, as the two thought.
“How much did they put into Yucca so far,” Phyllis’ finally asked.
“That I’m not sure about. But according to some tv news reports and an article I read online, the media suspect something like a couple of thousand tons–so far.”
“I knew those idiots in Congress would slip Yucca through some congressional rider or something!”
“Besides telling you about this, there’s another reason why I called…the Team is going to get together again and try to tell everyone in Nevada. In fact, some of our hacktivists are already on it on social media right now!”
“Good,” Phyllis said with a determined nod. “We may have to help some of the citizens out there relocate.”
“Yeah,” Andrew said with some pain, “we were hoping to avoid that. But it sure sounds like we may have to consider it. With this new crop of ideologues in DC and their allies in the governor mansions throughout the US, I don’t see those poor people getting help from our very own government!”
A short, silent spot.
“This shit’s getting deep, Phyl. Things may get a little–dirty. We’ll need some good lawyers to cover for us…you interested?”
“Andy, you know better than to even ask me that!”
A chuckle from the older man. “Great…well, I’m at Baltimore-Washington right now. I should be landing in Vegas by afternoon. Think we could meet you out there today? I know you’ve been busy with your firm and all–”
“No, I’ll be there. I just need to reschedule a bit here…I do think it’s important that we’re both there, though. You never know, it could just be more disinformation from DC–”
“Or the corporate boards that get the federal contracts on these projects,” Andrew interjected. Indeed, Phyllis had forgotten about that angle.
She had a sudden thought. “Think we’re being bugged?”
Another pause. Then Phyllis’ connection to Andrew was cut.

………………….

Yucca Mountain, Nevada. The Exploratory Studies Facility, for the proposed national spent nuclear waste dump project…

Phyllis and Andrew watched as the maintenance crew packed up their gear and hopped into the white, government truck and drove off from the North Portal of the Exploratory Facility. Since both had driven down from Las Vegas several hours ago in one of Andrew’s local friend’s car, it was the best shot they had to go into the facility–but not through the North Portal, but by following the maintenance crew! Surprisingly, there were actual tours given at the Yucca Mountain facility, but not in the evenings. So the subversive lawyer and her retired, black listed reporter friend had to think of more creative ways to get inside. They figured every facility will always have some kind of maintenance crew on the clock–even after the US Congress halted the Yucca project due to political pressures and priorities.
The duo had gone on foot. They were able to keep up with the maintenance workers, as their truck slowly made its rounds and frequent stops for checkups. Being dark on a Fall evening helped cloak Phyllis and Andrew. Finally, the workers drove up to one of the Exploratory’s twenty-five foot, gaping boreholes that had two giant conduits poking out of it…and that was their break!
After both ran into the shadowy entryway, Phyllis and Andrew found hiding spots against the facility’s support structures. Looking down the house-sized tunnel, they were able to see those two same conduits running the entire length of the system, but on the ceiling. They waited until the maintenance crew were completely gone before they made their move.
That same friend of Andrew whom lived in Las Vegas that had supplied the car also gave Phyllis and Andrew a set of night-vision goggles for both of them. He was one of those so-called survivalists. Phyllis was not comfortable around him. For his types of politics were the total opposite of her Progressive views. But Andrew Stahlman had a lot of connections from his old days as an investigative reporter. He tended to make a lot of friends during those days, and they ran the entire political spectrum.
Finally, after nearly an hour of sneaking around in the same stretch of tunnel, they saw a hallway that connected to other areas of the Exploratory facility. The two had split up by this time, should one or the other get caught, that person could always claim they acted alone.
Phyllis was using her own smartphone to record her experience in the facility. Andrew was a bit too old school for that, so he left the recording to her. He did have a smartphone, but Andrew brought it along mainly to text Phyllis whatever it was he found or some other information. He had already gone down one of the other industrial hall way, so Phyllis had to act as her own watch and pointperson…
Still recording as she went on another fifteen minutes or so, Phyllis saw a small room just off of the main hallway. It looked like a spot for visitors, but she ventured there anyway; not expecting to see much. And not surprising, the basic door was unlocked…what would be the need to lock a tourist cove?
‘NOT SEEING ANY EVIDENCE OF A NUCLEAR FALLOUT OR EMERGENCY FROM THE EARTHQUAKE IN ARIZONA! ARE YOU?’ was Andrew’s text to Phyllis.
‘SAME HERE! WERE WE FED DISINFO TO TRAP US?’ she texted back to him, as she slid into the small room; panic slowly starting to bubble in her!
‘HOPE NOT!’
‘GOING DARK FOR A BIT,’ Phyllis informed.
‘K.’
There was nothing but the large windows to parts of the facility in that visitor cove, so she left it after a few minutes. While waiting in the shadows of one of the Exploratory facility’s other sections, Phyllis saw a worker exit from what appeared to be some type of control room…she made a break for it!
…and saw the director of the facility!
“I was wondering when you’d finally make it here,” the young thirty-something said to Phyllis. She wore a white coat that so many of those industrial complexes tend to have. She was not wearing a hard hat like every other person Phyllis had seen wear the whole time she was in the facility. Probably her outward way of saying to everyone else, ‘I’m in control and don’t have to wear a hard hat if I don’t want to.’
Phyllis didn’t even try to play it off. She had the look of defeat on her countenance. There was no one else around in the modern control room. It was an indicator that the director knew about her and Andrew and figured they were no threat to anyone.
“I’m –” the young woman started, until Phyllis jumped in.
“Tanya Ash, the director of the facility…one of those genius kids who got their doctorate in their twenties, blah, blah, blah…”
The director smirked, more for the way Phyllis expressed herself. “Well, you’re not so dumb yourself, Ms. Lund. Top of your class at Yale, started your own practice without any money from rich parents…I only question your judgement and politics.”
“So where do you keep it all,” Phyllis asked; helping herself to a nearby office chair.
“You mean the spent nuclear materials?”
“Of course…”
Director Ash sighed. “Ms. Lund, what we are doing is not evil, nor is it illegal.”
“Guess not; the energy industry paid off some of those in Congress so they would blow holes into environmental laws, just so they could justify opening up Yucca Mountain to all your radioactive filth!”
Just then, the door opened and a security guard escorted old man Andrew into the room. The guard nodded and left after a look from the director.
“Sorry I’m late to the party,” he said as he, too, helped himself to a seat next to Phyllis.
Surprisingly, the young woman grabbed some papers from one of the consoles and handed them to the duo. Phyllis and Andrew took some time to read through them–government papers on the re-vamped Yucca Mountain project. It was filled with diagrams, outlines, budgets, and paragraphs upon paragraphs of info.
In a couple of minutes, both Phyllis and Andrew looked up from the papers and stared at each other…then back at Director Ash.
“Yes,” the director said as she found her own chair, now, “Operation Thunderclap actually works! No one in Vegas felt a thing!”
“They sure as hell felt it in Kingman,” Andrew threw back.
“They were supposed to–they were the test subjects…no one was killed; no buildings fell. We achieved our goal of pinpointing the weapon to one particular building in Kingman. You see the results in that report from a couple of days ago.”
Indeed, there were several photographs of a razed structure that had a before and after profile. The five storied, abandoned farm structure was a heap of bricks and concrete.
“Now,” Director Ash continued; her voice in victory, “imagine doing that to ISIS, or Al-Qaeda operatives hiding in cities, using civilians as human shields…all we’d have to do is zero in on the very ground each man stood on and zap them! No more worries–or excuses, I might add–about not sending in our military to conflict zones and have to deal with collateral damages!”
“So…” Phyllis was, now, thinking out loud, “all this–the focus on Yucca Mountain, the fracking…all that was –”
“Just a cover story. Yes, I don’t mind telling you.” Now the director got up from her chair and went over to one of the terminals and turned on one of the wall-sized computer monitors. She logged on and brought up more pictures, graphs, and info on Operation Thunderclap.
“All this…all this is legal, per the US federal government. We are not obligated to tell the public when national security is at risk or is the main objective,” she said while highlighting various government official signatures captured in the video. “And you know what that means for you, don’t you?”
Phyllis, the lawyer of the duo, dejectedly nodded her head. Furious, Andrew threw the papers he had in his hands onto the floor.
“We’re citizens and pay for all this with our taxes, like everyone else! We have every right to be here!”
“Then why did you sneak in here without permission, Mr. Stahlman,” Director Ash put to him.
“Andy…” Phyllis gave a look of, ‘Stand down.’
Indeed, the old school investigative reporter leaned back in his chair and looked toward the floor; barely able to stand to look at the government official.
“Now…you two have actually trespassed on federal property but have done no damages. As you can guess, I did my homework on both of you and I think we can all come out of this without anyone going to jail.”
That got the attention of Phyllis and Andrew. Both sat quietly, waiting for the director. She nodded with satisfaction and walked over to the same console she had gotten the other papers. This time, she brought with her two folders; one having Phyllis’ name on it and the other having Andrew’s. Director Ash leaned against a nearby ledge and waited for them to open and read the files.
Again, after a few minutes, the duo looked up from the papers and glanced at one another.
“You’re crazy,” Phyllis simply said.
Ash shrugged. “Either that or you go to prison for several years with no early let-out. Makes no difference to me; I’ll continue Thunderclap while you’d both be in prison for years…oh, and that little ‘Team’ of yours–all those hackers and enviro-vigilantes? We know about them, too.”
Phyllis and Andrew looked at each other somberly, and back at their folders.
“You both either work for us from now on–Mr. Stahlman, we could use you on the tv news shows; Ms. Lund, you can go to court for our cause–or you both retire in federal prison…what’s it going to be?”

A Slammer’s Wist: San Francisco…

This Slam Poetry was originally posted by me on Facebook, after my trip to Silicon Valley in October of 2016…  Joseth Moore.

Belgium poet Mary Sarton decried the alieness of Old Age. While I’m a Gen-Xer and still on that journey to the land of the Old, I sure the hell can see the landscape getting larger and larger in my windshield as I drive in this road trip we call Life…
I sware…it isn’t enough that all of my bosses at my various jobs are always younger than me–young enough to be my own children, but, Et tu, San Francisco? Even on my getaway?
I come bearing gifts that a Middle-Ager could share, but you seem more interested in GIFs.
Your youthful carapace reflects the glow of your high-tech soul-mate, your tribal markings are the skinny genes and the faux-boot of some kind and your stylish, thick-rimmed glasses–often complimented by the thin wire that is connected to your ears, which often leads back to that soul-mate of yours…
Your kind seem to gather in small groups, when you are not working–and sometimes even while! Your trade is in the Electronic Arts, with its Apps, Codes, Social Drivings, and such. Your complexion varies from White to various grades of Asian accents. It was only in the depths of your downtown, out in the hard rain, did I see any signs of Dark spots that were on you.
And you are beautiful. You are also grimy. But it’s a good look for you. You are a conurbation of Millennials, pulling every string and lever, where in time past it would’ve been your grandparents–only, Diesel- or Atomic-punk! A spike of jealousy keeps nagging at me as I walk your streets. How this should’ve been me–me being YOU, when I was younger. Me being you, that Star City that I go back to not having such celestial qualities after all… but it’s me.
When it’s all said and done, it always goes back to being Me. Me being reminded of the future whenever I see entire cities now being ruled by the Children, Me being of a generation where it’s expected of us to be at home after we’ve toiled for the day, Me being reminded of my own mortality and, worst yet, my own superfluity…

America, Perhaps It’s Time For A Divorce?

Joseth Moore· (Original posting:  Wednesday, July 13, 2016)

Brexit. Those of us that follow international news know the turn-out of that Referendum. After decades of being a member of the European Union, the UK citizens had barely voted to “Leave” the EU. Mind you, some misunderstood the catastrophic consequences, or some on the Right, frankly, smudged the positives about leaving, but that’s another argument. Since the Referendum, the British Pound had lost approximately 31 years of gains, and many international businesses are in the process of pulling up their stakes in the UK for more stable grounds…

What does the Brexit have to do with my post? Well, like I told my wife on one of my tirades on American politics, we, in the US, need to learn from the Brexit situation–as in, Whether or not we, Americans, even want to be a nation anymore, because we are acting like we don’t even want to be in this ‘political marriage!’

The UK’s referendum is kind of like one gigantic, geo-political experiment–in real-time!–on what a modern, industrialized nation would go through if such nation decided to dissolve, via the ballot-box. Especially, while avoiding a civil war!

Now, the example or analogy of the UK’s exit from the EU is not a parallel story. For the European Union is a federation of sovereign countries. The United States of America, obviously, is comprised of 50 states and commonwealth-states (my creation–like it?). But, the similarities of the Brexit is close enough.

So, should we, the United States, vote to dissolve our Union? Why am I even asking this? You know why: the racial divisions have gotten worse since President Obama’s election, because of the reaction of White supremacists to him. President Obama did not create the division. You can read various, objective sources about the hate groups that have grown right after Obama’s election–something like, from 800+ to around 1,300 by 2013…check Southern Law Poverty, the Justice Department, etc. We, also, see–thanks to smartphone tech & people with the presence of mind to do it–the recordings of White cops (some Black ones, too) beat and kill unarmed African-American men. I don’t remember the source, but since the Federal government does not officially record the race of people killed by cops, some independent academic groups did some digging and found that something like 400 Black men have been killed by police officers, on average, each year for the past 3 to 4 years. (Sorry, I don’t remember who these students & grad students are. No time for much research today.) Then, we still have the run-of-the-mill racism in society where death is not involved…

Ok, what about the “other side?” What do I mean? Well, we saw how Micah Johnson, a Black nationalist & racist, killed the five police officers in Dallas. He wanted to specifically kill White cops. Days later, a few young Black people were caught trying to do the same thing in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The number of Black nationalist groups and/or hate groups has almost reached 200, from just over 100 a few years ago…not surprising, a reaction to police killing several unarmed African-American men. Not surprising, but a terrible trend!

Oh, by the way, did I mention that I’m African-American?

Ok, bottom-lining it, here: with all that I simply outlined above, with Republicans having elected Donald Trump as their nominee for the general election, and with so many Conservative Americans that hate Hillary Clinton, the Culture Wars (LGBT rights, abortion rights, etc)…we are not behaving like a nation that wants to be as one America anymore! And, personally speaking, before we have the American Civil War sequel, I’d rather do it via the ballot-box than to have civil war–like the Brexit referendum!
Look, I don’t want this to happen, but it seems the logical path to go. Problem is, the logistics. A few years ago, I called an agency that deals with Constitutional procedures at the legislative level. In order for the US to have a similar referendum, like the UK, we’d have to get something like 2/3 of an OK from all 50 US states’ legislatures; about 2/3 of the House of Representatives ok; and about 2/3 of the Senate to pass a bill for that Proposition (is what the guy in DC over the phone said how Americans call our “referendums”) just to vote on whether or not we want to remain a united state! Then, of course, you’d have the need for the president (whomever that would be!) to even sign the damn bill…& that’s the “Constitutional path” to hold an “American-style” Brexit!

Ok, safe to say the US Founders did that on purpose to “rig” (couldn’t resist!) the Constitution so we would not “Amerexit” ourselves…

So, just thinking about how we, Americans, have been acting toward one another, & what would be involved in “divorcing” ourselves from those “Other Americans,” should we split the United States up? Remember the US’s requirements from the House, the Senate, & all 50 statehouses…& even if we did actually achieved such near-fantasy law, how would we divide this “new America” up? Who’d get all that flat, fertile prairie land? Anybody want the Dakotas’ “badlands?”

Think on this, America. Seriously think…

A Call For Progressives to Secede FROM the United States of America…

by Joseth Moore  (Originally posted: December 15, 2015)

I have been advocating this for a few years now. And people who follow me on Twitter or LinkedIn who are offended by my stance on this can “unFriend” me and that would be just fine for me…what’s going on in America and the rest of the world is far more important.

I WANT TO SECEDE FROM THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND SO DO OTHER PROGRESSIVES. There. I said it.
Not to be confused with those Reich-Wingers you find in those backwards states in the Great Plains, the SouthWest, or the South. I’m talking about Socialists, Anarchists, Liberals, Secularists, Hippies, Hipsters…ALL those of the Progressive demographics and philosophies of modern-day societies, and others I’ve left out.

Some references here: io9’s wonderful article by Lauren Davis titled “10 Movements to Secede from the United States” LINK: http://io9.com/5923080/10-movements… is a great start. The Conch Republic, Second Vermont Republic, Republic of Lacotah, and the Republic of Cascadia (again, I encourage all to read the linked-article) are not all, exactly, on the same page politically. The ‘Conch’ is considered, more or less, a parody to demonstrate how even Liberals could get fed up with the US Federal government. But, again, referencing these movements as some form of precedence, it’s a place to start.
Then there’s Hawaii. Al Jazeera America’s Brittany Lyte’s article “First steps toward Native Hawaiian sovereignty get tripped up” is another great reference: LINK: http://america.aljazeera.com/articl…

The US Supreme Court, not surprisingly, had blocked the counting of ballots for an election by early December 2015 (just a few weeks ago) that would’ve set the stage for Native Hawaiians to convene a constitutional convention for the formulation of Sovereignty from the US! Guess Justice Kennedy (for some reason, the sole Justice that officially acted on this issue, according the article) could not handle the possibility of the Native Hawaiians starting to pull that first string that would unravel that tattered cloth called United States of America!

Bottom lining this: speaking from my perspective, I want to live in a new, sovereign area of North America built specifically for Progressives because I’m tired of “trying” to live with a bunch of bigots (based on race, ethnicity, religion, political identity, sexual orientation, and classes) that think they have the right to KILL others, or kick them out of /keep from America, whom they deem unacceptable for the afore-mentioned classes! And I say this with absolutely no irony that I truly believe that if we keep this up there will be a Second American Civil War!

So, to avoid this, I say we, Progressives, should formulate a new North American country–if not, at the very least, some kind of “Autonomous” entity. Kind of like the way Hong Kong was, before returning back to China recently…that seemed to work for Hong Kong. If it were not for the “lease” agreement from the United Kingdom, Hong Kong would have remained autonomous, I’m sure (but, technically, under British rule–so a little different).

I’ve researched this for years, now. The US NorthWestern region (Washington and Oregon states) keep coming up among Progressives I’ve read about. Or, California. I, personally, think those areas would be excellent places to start. They are already the most Progressive regions of USA. Why try to re-invent the wheel?
This is, actually, just a concept proposal. I will probably write and post more on this. But we Progressives, who want to actually secede from the current American system, with the Republican Party occupying the majority of the levels of government, have to start somewhere and stop simply talking or joking about it!
