The two officers that were sent to check the house’s second floor quickly moved through each room, checking for any signs of danger. Fortunately, there were none. Relieved, they nodded at each other.
“Second floor, clear,” Michael, one of the two officers, reported over the comm…nothing.
“Sergeant Ted Walker,” the other officer tried after they both waited for about ten seconds, “this is CPD officer Allison Donaldson reporting that Officer Ramirez and I have swept the second floor–it is cleared!
Over…”
Still nothing…and that included no more cries from the SWAT team on the third floor! Officer Donaldson glanced at the other officer anxiously. They both knew something was wrong. Officer Donaldson made the call to the SWAT team again, her voice a little louder and more urgent this time.
“Jesus,” Officer Ramirez stated, sweat, now, dripping from both of their faces.
“Ok,” Officer Donaldson said, as she tried calming down Ramirez and take control of the situation, “I’m going to call for backup, but we can’t wait–there are citizens and our team on the third floor, Ramirez! So, after I do this call, bro, you and I are going up there…copy that?”
Ramirez nodded, but the apprehension was clear in his countenance! Officer Donaldson quickly made the call for backup and they both started running towards the stairs. They raced up the stairs to the third floor, weapons drawn, ready to face whatever waited for them on the other side of the door. Before opening the door, Officer Donaldson held up one of her hands and silently signaled to Officer Ramirez to wait for her to give the signal. He nodded. Donaldson slowly opened the door and peered inside. Her eyes widened as she saw what was in the room. Officer Ramirez followed her gaze…
For all practical purposes, the third floor was a church; albeit, small, given that it was on the third floor of a century-old house! There were no stained-glass windows, though candles populated the circumference of the layout. All were lit and not a single modern electrical light was used on the third floor!
The pulpit was pretty basic–Dorian, by ancient, architectural standards. Where there usually was some scene depicted from the Bible in towering stain-glass motif behind such pulpits, in its stead were various undulating, pagan symbols mixed in with some Christian icons…but there was no one at the pulpit! Nor was there any music…no chants…
…the pews. The pews were full, almost to capacity! But seated in those antique, wooden seats were not churchgoers, but all the Chicago Police Department’s special squadron and its SWAT team that were assigned to the mission of raiding the middle-class house that was believed to house a major drug organization! But the closest thing to any drugs that officers Donaldson and Ramirez could see in front of them on the third floor was one large circle of salt that was on the floor, directly in front of the pulpit!
They had been tipped off that some drug organization was using the house for drug deals. But the salt circle suggested that the activity was of a different kind. Suddenly, an unexpected feeling of dread filled Officer Ramirez, especially after seeing all their dead fellow officers.

“…kind of a pain in the ass when they want your residency from the past ten years, huh,” Paula conversationally put while she was finishing up copying some of Adam’s new-hire paperwork. “Don’t worry, it’s because of the kids with all these families why background checks here are so extra!”
“Tell me about it! Paula, I’m going to be honest with you, I don’t remember where I lived when I was nine!”
“That’s common, hon. We get a lot of military brats…a lot of you guys lived in more countries than I’ve lived in—”
“I’m sorry, you misunderstand, Paula; I have no memory where I was nine years ago and beyond that…” That made the secretary stop dead in her tracks.
She looked at him, making sure he wasn’t joking. Paula then walked over to the tiny table where Adam was; in the background, more citizens were filing into the community center, rounding Paula’s cubical office. A couple of them greeting Paula as they passed by.
“What are you telling me, Adam? You were in so many foster homes that you lost track?”
The young man chuckled. “I know we’re so used to hearing that in society, but I lived with my parents until I moved into my college dorm, Paula…I know from what my mom and dad told me that we used to live out West somewhere…”
“And that’s it, huh?”
A pensive nod from Adam.
Paula craned to look what he wrote on his form. “So, the furthest out that you can remember is a Corona…New Mexico?”
“Right.”
“You know what, Adam, nine years is close enough. It’s not like we’re the CIA or something, right? Oh, before I forget, here are your id’s back…I’m guessing they’re going to need your help in the kitchen, after seeing all these people come in!”
“For sure…thanks, Paula.”
“Yup.” She smiled as Adam quickly walked off toward the kitchen area.
Truth was she was waiting for him to leave. Paula looked at the typical two-forms of identification that most places of employment demand upon hiring. Adam’s social security card and the number with it was legitimate she could tell before even running it through security, and, frankly, so was his Connecticut driver’s license though his image on it seemed…off. Not illegally photocopied or anything like that. Given that high-tech cameras had flashed-lights that were able to capture more details of a subject without drowning out the picture with too much light, one was able to see more features of the subjects’ driver’s license profile pics.
Upon closer inspection, to Paula, the shape of Adam’s eyes seemed a bit—oval. Plus, a little on the larger side. At first, Paula thought, perhaps he wore eye-makeup the day he had his driver’s license picture taken. Culturally speaking, a lot of men—especially those of the more Gothic-tendencies—wore eyeliner. But anyone that saw Adam could safely say he did not come across as a Gothic sort…
More importantly, Paula was concerned about Adam, apparently, not knowing where he lived as a child with his parents from birth to the age of nine—young, but old enough to clearly remember what city and state one resided in!
– Another, & more important, reason Frozen Empire is MORE relatable to this generation of movie-goers / #streaming-watchers is the #character, #PhoebeSpengler (#McKennaGrace) — whom ends up having a brief relationship with a ghost, “created” after a deadly fire; by the name of Melody (#EmilyAlynLind). Turns out, Phoebe is either lesbian or Bi–not given explicitly in the movie, so that’s why i say it this way. I say, AWESOME! Like it or not, the majority of #Millennials, #GenZers, & even a lot of #GenXers (including THIS one!) embrace our #LGBTQ-friends & family! Good for business…just saying!
– Third reason why i loved Frozen Empire so much: the Environmental aspect to it! As in, (throwing in some biology, here!) the #carryingcapacity of how much “ghost forces” the Ghostbusters’ #ghost-vault is able to contain?! Indeed, because of the limited space it can contain all the #ghosts they’ve captured since the 80s, it was “weaponized” by the antagonist, #Garraka, by breaking it open & releasing (most?) of the ghosts, #spirits, & other entities! As a result, the nice sunny Summer day (Spring?) in #NewYorkCity turns Wintery–a bit of a nod to the issue of #ClimateChange without beating our heads with it. And as a #SciFi #author, myself who’s a #Progressive, trust me, it’s probably best to do it that way!
– Lastly, just a well-written, acted, & directed (#GilKenan) story…as i said, as an indie author, i’ve learned do less of the #soapbox thing & focus MORE on the #storytelling! Just a fun movie. And, with these days of adjusting to the post- #Covid streaming era & movie-slumps, you’ve got to consider this if you want your movie to be moderately- #profitable in the 2020s!
